The Coach Approach to Executive and Organizational
Development
What is organizational
development? Organizational development is the field concerned with the
health and well being of the organization as a whole interconnected system of
many parts including people. The organizational development professional has
expertise in diagnosing and prescribing actions needed to continuously improve
those systems. This is an expertise that I bring to coaching with my clients
that sets me apart from other coaches.
Who do you work with? I
coach with new and experienced executives who lead organizations, departments
or teams. In these roles they are expected to simultaneously build the
capabilities of their organizations for the future, lead in ways that get the
most from the people around them, and meet business goals.
What do
you work on? I coach my clients to leverage the leadership vantage point
of their position to envision a better future for their organization or team
and to work with all parts of the system using the skills of leadership and
their own style.
In our coaching relationship, we work on developing
the executive as an effective leader while working on business issues or
organizational development, using a coaching approach, rather than traditional
consulting when working on the organizational issues like vision, strategy or
structure.
What is a coach approach? A coach approach means I
don't figure out the problems, produce paper or "deliverables". I coach my
clients to do the doing. This letter from a long time
client and CEO Jane Ransom, really paints the picture of how I work to
integrate an executive's development with their efforts to make impactful
change and lead for bottom-line results.

I bring a coach approach to traditional
consulting roles, seeking new models for working with people and organizations
to get them where they want to go more quickly and with results that last.
